Full description: The problem: The infrastructure and public transport are often not suitable for people with disabilities.

The solution: HawKar, is developing an environmentally friendly smart car for anyone with reduced mobility who wants to have a car and needs to move long distances every day.

State of development: HawKar is building a smart electric car that is directly accessible in a wheelchair and adapted to different physical disabilities. HawKar’s smart electric car is directly accessible in a wheelchair, compact, affordable and environmentally friendly. It is a single-seater city car with a maximum speed of 45 km/h, its power is 4 kW & the capacity of its batteries is 3 kW which allows it to have a range of a one-way drive for more than 60 km.

Ambitions: Hawkar wants to make the independence and freedom of mobility accessible to all and to allow people with reduced mobility to move long distance freely.

Achievements: HawKar’s solution won at DemoAfrica 2018 and will be at the 2019 edition of the Lions@frica Innovation Tour in Silicon Valley. Hawkar joined THE NEXT SOCIETY in 2019 when it was selected to benefit from the Start-up Booster Track support program in Tunisia.

In the context of Mobility impaired in Africa: Disability research in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa is developing rapidly, and this is something to be celebrated. Hawkar is an optimistic but appropriately critical approach to addressing mobility issues is on the continent.
