Description : The problem : In Benin, with the lack of efficient public transport, more than 150,000 motorcycle taxis, driven mainly by unemployed young people, congest the streets of Cotonou in search of customers. Simultaneously, delivery service costs are usually pretty high.

The solution : Launched in 2016 by Gloria Accrombessi, ZemExpress is a geo-locating transport and delivery service from the startup MobileLab. It operates through taxis moto commonly know as « zemidjans » via a mobile application and Whatsapp. Zemexpress connects customers and motorcycle taxis drivers from major cities across the country to deliver packages to homes or transport people. Customers can choose to pay by by Mobile Money or cash.  Orders pass through Zemexpress local management system and are directly assigned to the Zems  referenced in the database. Zemexpress also offered goods and food delivery with real time monitoring thanks to partnerships with restaurants, Ecommerce and Bakeries. To expand its activities, Zemexpress launched logistics services for companies

State of development : Zemidjans registered 10,000 km per week (2017) with an average of 70 deliveries by day and would like to reach 150 daily trips. Mobilelab also offers passenger services with Wazemi (a carpooling and meetup site) night for night out and Wazemi school for pupils and students. For companies, Zemexpress allows them to increase their sales by integrating the ZemExpress API at the end of the purchase process, its couriers deliver all their products by express delivery or by appointment.

Ambitions: Improve the localization technology for drivers not to lose time on finding customers position.

Within the context of Last mile delivery in Africa : In the sector of Last mile delivery in Africa, startups like MobileLab who chose to develop a service which relies on local way of transport perfectly understood the importance of context.

Appreciation: A really clever solution as long as zemidjans remain on the transport sector. Plus it is a very nice alternative to the express courier giants who sometimes, in the absence of competition charge exorbitant prices.
